Rainy weather tonight with much colder air to follow

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) - A cold front is on the move across the southeast and arrives in Atlanta overnight. Ahead of the front, scattered showers and a thundershower will develop. The chillier weather moves in Friday, along with a potential freeze this weekend.

Even though it's a warm and tropical Thursday night, there is not enough instability to produce severe weather, so only light to moderate rain and a random thunderstorm is forecast in Atlanta. The rain should come to an end near, or before, the Friday morning rush.  Rain totals won't be overly heavy, with most of us picking up less than ½ inch.

On Friday, a gusty wind and colder temperatures are forecast. You will want a jacket handy, as highs only top out in the middle 50's. Friday night will be even colder, as lows dip into the 30's and wind chills drop to 20's.

Saturday morning, a light freeze or frost is forecast for parts of north Georgia. On Sunday morning, frost will be widespread, along with a hard freeze across the countryside.   Your pets and all your sensitive plants will need to be inside in a warmer location.
