COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds announced that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will investigate the officer-involved shooting that occurred in Smyrna on March 25.

“The Cobb District Attorney's Office and the Cobb County Police Department have requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation of the March 25, 2015 shooting incident in Smyrna, Ga.,” Reynolds said. “In the spirit of transparency and openness, both agencies have made this request with the support of the Smyrna Police Department. The GBI has agreed to conduct a separate, independent investigation, and this will begin immediately. Upon completion of this investigation, it will be transmitted to the District Attorney's Office for their review.”

Smyrna and Cobb police attempted to arrest Nicholas Thomas on a probation-violation warrant. Thomas was shot and killed by Smyrna police Sergeant Kenneth Owens as police said he drove a vehicle toward the officers.

"It was at that time that the suspect drove his car toward the officers and they were in fear for their lives and fired rounds inside the vehicle," said Smyrna Police Ofc. Ed Cason.

However, witnesses said the car wasn't going toward the officers.

"He wasn't coming at them with force from within his car, as they were trying to report. That's not what happened," said witness Brittney Eustache.

Thomas' family has been calling on an investigation since Thomas was killed.
