Parents of Nicholas Thomas make plea at Ebenezer Baptist Church

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

An Easter service turned into a family's public plea Sunday morning.

The parents of Nicholas Thomas, who was shot and killed by police in Smyrna, were the guests of honor at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Felicia and Huey Thomas have been very outspoken ever since their son was killed as officers attempted to arrest him at his job in Smyrna for a probation violation. Witnesses said police tried to subdue Thomas with a non-lethal weapon, but somehow, he still died.

"They've messed with the wrong family, and the wrong child," said Felicia Thomas.

Almost three weeks after her son's death, Felicia Thomas is just as upset as she was the day it happened.

She and her husband received a personal invitation to attend services at Ebenezer and they said from now on, they'll be returning every Sunday.

"Being in this church today is really helping us out spiritually, and we want to thank Pastor Warnock, as well as Ebenezer and the community," said Huey Thomas.

Pastor Raphael Warnock is among those who wanted the state to take an extra look at the evidence.

"Some objective entity outside the realm of that immediate department ought to do the investigation," said Warnock.

The Cobb County district attorney said he wasn't responding to pressure when he brought in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"In the end, you can't allow family emotion, you can't allow media interest, you can't allow special interest groups to dictate what you do in this office," said Vic Reynolds.

Reynolds said he has no problem bringing in an extra set of eyes if it makes everyone feel better.

Funeral arrangements are still pending for Nicholas Thomas, but family expects it will eventually be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
