ATLANTA (CBS46) - Atlanta police said it's a miracle that two of their officers are still alive after a woman opened fire on them while in the back of a patrol car in Downtown Atlanta.

Police said 25-year-old Alexia Christian fired three shots at the officers from the back of the patrol car. Two of the shots were able to make it through the glass that separated Christian from the officers.

The incident occurred near Underground Atlanta Thursday afternoon after Atlanta police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle. They found Christian inside the stolen vehicle and took her into custody.

Police say that Christian was fully handcuffed when she was put into the patrol car, but was able to set one of her hands free in the patrol car.

"It was clear to us the officers did not search her prior to putting her into the back of the car," said Atlanta Police Chief George Turner.

Police say the officers were simply asking Christian her name when she opened fire. The officers immediately jumped out of the patrol car and returned a total of 10 shots, striking Christian, according to police.

She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she later died.

Police say the incident happened quickly and the officers simply didn't have enough time to call in a female officer, adding that the male officers can pat down a female with the back of their hand with witnesses present.

An Atlanta police spokesman said the two officer missed being killed by an inch.

The officers have been identified as 53-year-old Jeffery Cook and 33-year-old Omar Thyme. Cook has 18 years of service with the department, while Thyme has 10 months of service.

Witnesses at the scene told CBS46 that several shots were fired and that a lot of people were running around.

“I was here on the sidewalk,” said Veronica Ridin. “There was like six or seven shots. All we heard was shots. And we just took off running. I was thinking they was shooting at the people that was outside of the car running. But I believe they was just trying to save themselves from the shots that was going on.”

Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave while the case is investigated. CBS46 has requested copies of the surveillance video at the intersection. No word on when that video will be made available.

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office released seven mugshots of Christian, which were all taken at various times at the Fulton County jail.
