Potential annex of schools leaves Fulton County parents fuming

Posted: Updated:

Parents in Fulton County are frustrated because about 1,800 school kids attending Sandtown elementary and middle schools could be displaced.

The move comes after the city of Atlanta filed a petition to annex the community.

".. We haven't heard anything from the annexation group about what the plan is...Where are these students going to go?" said Kimberly Hartwell, a parent of an A. Philip Randolph Elementary School student.

With no mention of what schools students will attend next school year, parents are worried about how this may impact their kids.

Julia Williams, 11, was almost brought to tears at the thought of being removed from her beloved community.

"I might start crying," she said. "I love this community and I can't live without it."

Sandtown isn't alone. Two other communities are also on the chopping block, including South Oak and Loch Lomond.

"It's not only Philip and Sandtown middle schools, but it's the other schools in South Fulton that are affected and we know first hand because we hear the schools are overcrowded. The school board has already said there's not enough seats at all," said parent Monica Manning.

On Wednesday, a seven-person board of commissioners will voted on this petition.
