Cobb County DA says grand jury will hear Nick Thomas case

The mother of Nick Thomas met with Cobb County District Attorney Vic Reynolds Tuesday to discuss the case involving her son, who was shot to death in March by a Smyrna police officer.

Thomas, 23, was working at the Goodyear store on Cumberland Parkway when officers attempted to take him into custody for a probation violation. According to witnesses, when Thomas realized what was happening, he jumped in a customer's Maserati.

Sgt. Kenneth Owens said he fired into the car because Thomas was driving toward officers.

“Like I keep telling people, this is an American problem,” said Felicia Thomas.

Reynolds assured the Thomas family that once police and GBI wrap up their separate investigations, he will take all the evidence to a grand jury for review.

“A grand jury will hear it. That grand jury will have a couple determinations on what they can do with the case," Reynolds said.

While this case has been compared to other high-profile police shootings nationwide, Reynolds says he won't let any other cases or emotion influence his decisions.

“In the end, I'm going to do what I am convinced is right. Period," Reynolds added.

Felicia Thomas has been vocal since her son's death, suggesting that lethal force was used on her son because he was black.

“I feel blessed just to have positive feedback today, and I feel like we're going to be moving in the right direction,” Thomas said.

Ben Williams, president of the Cobb County Chapter of the SCLC, also attended the meeting. He said of the district attorney, “We are encouraged because he has positioned himself to work with us in addressing our concerns and our demands.”
