Suspect in custody after motel fire injures 10, including firefighter

Posted: Updated:

Police have a suspect in custody after a fire forced the evacuation of a hotel on Saturday, injuring 10 people including a firefighter.

The fire started late Saturday afternoon at the Days Inn & Suites, located at 3900 Fulton Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta.

CBS46 Reporter Dontaye Carter reports that several ambulances were on scene, transporting the injured to area hospitals. 10 people, including one firefighter sustained injuries. The extent of those injuries are not immediately known.

Firefighters went through windows on the second floor looking for anyone that may have been trapped inside. They say they contained the fire to one room of the facility. Several people used a mattress on the ground as a safety net as they were forced to jump from second story windows. At least 50 guests staying at the motel were displaced.

One family staying at the motel were able to make it out safely but their pets were trapped inside. Much to their happiness, firefighters were able to save the family's two puppies.

"I don't know what happened, I was scared I was going to die," said 11-year-old Keziah Gates. She was obviously elated when she saw her puppies alive. "I was happy, I started clapping. I started hugging everybody," said Gates.

The hotel owners and the Red Cross are helping out everyone that was affected by the fire. No fatalities were reported. Police have a person of interest in custody. His name is Roger Solomon. He is facing first-degree arson charges.

Parts of the motel have sustained smoke damage as a result of the blaze.
