Prosecution finishes questioning Burrell Ellis

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Suspended DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis took the witness stand for the fourth time Tuesday.

Prosecutors finished cross examining Ellis, questioning him about statements he made to the grand jury.

At times, the state asked Ellis to read his own statements in front of jurors.

There was a lot of back and forth between the suspended official and the prosecution, when Ellis would not give a yes or no answer to various questions.

He's accused of shaking down contractors for campaign contributions for his 2012 re-election campaign.

Ellis is maintaining his innocence.

“You know one of the things, one of the mantras I learned from my mentor Maynard Jackson is that never promise anybody anything in exchange for a campaign contribution. I've stated that several times and I've adhered to that as a public official," said Ellis.

This is the second time, Ellis has been on trial for political corruption. The first trial ended in a deadlocked jury last fall.
