Drug Free Zone in Marietta starts today

Posted: Updated:

The fight against drug activity starts in Marietta Wednesday.

Police are officially calling the areas surrounding Franklin and Delk roads, or Zone 1, a “Drug Free Zone”. This means there will be harsher penalties for whoever’s caught selling drugs.

“If you’re convicted of violating this statue, then the range is longer, also has some language that requires that for 24 months you’re not allowed, you’re banned from the area where you were arrested,” said state representative Bert Reeves.

The co-sponsor of the bill said the point is to attack the root of the problem.

“If we can get the dealers off the streets, then it can help cure the drug problem, it’ll help clean up the streets of Marietta and make it a safe place to live,” said the legislator.

From November 2012 to October 2013 nearly 30 percent of all arrests made in Zone 1 were drug related.  None of the other three zones broke 20 percent.

“I’ve seen a few drug busts happen as I was driving back and forth to work or driving somewhere,” said one neighbor.

Marietta police said “Drug Free Zone” signs should be posted in about a week.
