Elderly man crashes into house in gated Dunwoody subdivision

CBS46 News has learned that the man who drove his car into a home in Dunwoody early Friday morning was in his 80s.

The man, whose name has not been released, died in the fiery crash in the Brooke Ridge subdivision off Dunwoody Club Drive.

The homeowner, Hardeep Kukreja, said he and family members were asleep when something shook the house.

“It was a loud noise," he said, "and it seemed as if something was falling apart, you know?”

He looked downstairs and saw a car in his living area. There was a lot of smoke. Flames began to spread through his home. He made sure that his wife, his two children and his parents, who were visiting from India, got out safely.

The driver of the car did not survive. Authorities were still trying to determine his identity and what might have caused him to lose control of his vehicle inside the small, gated subdivision.

Kukreja's home sustained significant damage from the impact and the fire that followed. Still, he realizes that the situation could have been much worse.

“At first I was worried about the house, but now," he said, "I think we were lucky that we got out at the right time.”
