Police K9 death investigation wrapping up

CONYERS, GA (CBS46) -

Both the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office and the Conyers Police Department say they’re wrapping up their investigations into the death of a police K9.

Conyers is about 24 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Zane, 5, died last week after being left in a hot car for 10 hours. He’s since been buried, but his handler, Jerahmy Williams, is still on administrative leave.

“I think he should be prosecuted,” said a Conyers resident.

Conyers police said via email that the internal investigation is done. However, the police chief still has to decide Williams’ fate.

“Hard work, long day. He actually…I’m thinking…forgot it,” said dog owner Willie Hill.

The sheriff’s department said the incident still looks to be accidental and that the case still has to be presented to the sheriff and district attorney. If any charges are pursued, a spokesperson for the department said misdemeanor animal cruelty would be it.

While punishment is up to the judge, CBS46 is told jail time is probably unlikely.

CBS46 went to Williams’ home to get his side of the story. For a second time in a week, no one answered the door..
