Brookhaven police on lookout for jaywalkers

BROOKHAVEN, GA (CBS46) -

It’s been a month since the city of Brookhaven had additional crosswalks installed to help pedestrians avoid the need to jaywalk, but police say it doesn’t seem to be working.

“Pedestrians aren’t using them,” said Brookhaven Police Officer Carlos Nino.

The stretch of Buford Highway in Brookhaven is known to be one of the most dangerous for pedestrians in metro Atlanta.

Twenty pedestrian-involved accidents and at least one death have been reported in the area since 2013, according to Brookhaven city records.

Starting in August, police plan to kick off a new initiative to educate the public.

“We’re not going to be giving out tickets, we will give out warnings instead,” said Officer Nino.

A fine for jaywalking is worth $250.
