ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Hurricane Joaquin has formed in the western Atlantic Ocean. The forecast path takes it near the central Bahamas by Friday. After that, several weather players will determine when, or if, Joaquin will impact the U.S. coastline.

Hurricane warnings are in place in the Bahamas today, as Joaquin is forecast to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane in the coming days ahead. With the forecast turning the storm northward, it will catch the attention of everyone from the Carolinas north into New England.

An upper low is forecast to form over the southeast by the weekend which could deflect Joaquin away from the coastline, meaning landfall may not occur in the U.S.

However, this upper low will draw in most of the rain from Joaquin, setting up a life-threatening flood situation this weekend along the East Coast.
