Embattled DeKalb Co. CEO cancels town hall meeting

Posted: Updated:

Several DeKalb County citizens showed up at a town hall meeting Thursday night hoping to hear directly from Interim County CEO Lee May, but May wasn't there. He backed out of his own meeting at the last minute.

Sources alerted CBS46's Adam Murphy to the development Thursday morning, but some of the attendees didn't learn until it was too late that May wouldn't be there. The meeting went on as scheduled, with Commissioner Nancy Jester as the host.

"I am just 'Joe citizen,'" said one attendee. "I took off from work early today to come down here and address the CEO. Where is he?"

The meeting, held at the Maloof Auditorium on Commerce Drive in Decatur, was supposed to give residents a chance to sound off about mounting frustrations within the county. Citizens expected to hear directly from May after a report surfaced alleging widespread corruption. They wanted to hear his defense against allegations that he took out a questionable loan from a subordinate and that he was poised to have a county vendor help him with his financial problems.

"We have a mess in our county," said DeKalb County resident Viola Davis.

"People we need to rise up," said resident Harmel Codi. "We need to wise up and rise up."

It's not clear why May decided to cancel his appearance at the meeting. An employee in his office said May is planning to reschedule the meeting at a later date. It is not known if May's other scheduled town hall meetings will take place.
