DeKalb Co. sanitation director's driving record exposed

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

CBS46 uncovered more troubling information pertaining to DeKalb County’s sanitation director.

“He gets away with it because he’s the boss,” former Sanitation worker Sidarius Johnson said.

Johnson lashed out at his old boss after learning about Billy Malone’s history of crashing county vehicles. Johnson was fired for not reporting a DUI to the county.

“So how can you fire someone for incomplete paper work and yours is incomplete yourself? I just don’t get it,” Johnson said.

Our investigation found Malone’s most recent incident happened in 2014 when he ran into a pole at the county landfill. He reportedly left the scene.

In 2012, Malone was involved in two other accidents outside of DeKalb County. In each case, DeKalb County's internal incident reports were incomplete and it doesn’t appear that Malone took a drug and alcohol screening after each accident as required by code, according to a local union representative.

When asked if he had ever been charged or convicted of a DUI in a county vehicle, Malone said, "No."

Malone is right about that, but CBS46 has learned he was arrested for DUI in 2003. He was not in a county vehicle and police said the case was later reduced to reckless driving.

“They want more disciplinary action than verbal warnings on these accidents, but you’ve got several, but you don’t’ get any disciplinary action. Who do you answer to?” Johnson said.

CBS46 has requested a follow up interview with Malone since he first spoke two days ago, but he hasn’t responded.
