Records show all but one member on Ga. commission are white

When it comes to Georgia's boards and commissions, the largest black caucus in the country said its members are fighting for a seat at the table.

“The Governor’s appointments ought to look like Georgia in all of its diversity and all its rich cultural heritage,” said Secretary of Georgia’s Legislative Black Caucus and State Senator Vincent Fort.

Fort said one of the most recent examples is the state’s Medical Cannabis Commission. There are 17 members and 11 were appointed by Governor Nathan Deal. All but one of them are white.

“It is disappointing, although I’m not surprised,” said Fort.

Fort said it was members of the Black Caucus who insisted sickle cell anemia be listed as an illness on the cannabis oil bill.

“African Americans are disproportionally affected by certain diseases that cannabis oil is effective in treating,” said Fort.

That being the case, he thought someone from that community would be appointed to the commission.

“Not just morally right, but just logical to have African Americans and Latinos on this panel,” said Fort.
