Does DeKalb County have worst neighborhood in America?

Posted: Updated:

Some are calling a DeKalb County community the worst neighborhood in America. The blight at the Brannon Hill condos near Clarkston (unincorporated DeKalb Country) is beyond belief and now we've learned that a documentary has been released detailing the issues.

“I’m going to work on it for as long as it takes,” said DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton said. She made it clear that cleaning up the property is not a quick fix.

“This is a system of laws and we have to do it that way,” Barnes Sutton said.

Barnes Sutton said she and other county leaders have been working to address the issue in her district for more than a year. So what progress has been made at the property?

“Well a lot of it is legal. We are identifying the property owners,” Barnes Sutton said.

Two weeks before to this story, Commissioner Nancy Jester toured the property and called for the county to take action immediately to remove the trash and condemn the burned buildings.

“She never came to me and asked me even though it’s my district. I think she was aware that we have been working on this for a year and she still didn’t come and talk, and to this day she hasn’t come to talk to me,” Barnes Sutton said.  “We’re trying to maneuver our way through having that debris removed. That’s a priority of mine.”

Residents living at Brannon Hill have told CBS46 the county is full of empty promises and nothing has changed at the complex in decades.

“The county cannot go on private property and remove a building without going through a court process,” Barnes Sutton said.

Barnes Sutton went on to say that her long term goal with Brannon Hill is to have the property out there completely redeveloped and relocate the people to better accommodations. No time line for accomplishing that goal.
