Atlanta Muslim community says to fight fear with facts

Posted: Updated:

A new study shows that 2015 has been one of the most intensely anti-Muslim periods of American history.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, mosques across the country are seeing more incidents of harassment, threats, zoning issues and vandalism. The council said there have been at least 63 of those incidents in 2015 alone, which is three times the number seen in 2014.

This is part of the reason why Muslims in Atlanta are trying to get their message out about their support in the fight against terrorism.

In a newspaper ad, the Atlanta Muslim community had a very clear and distinctive message for everyone living in Georgia. They expressed profound sorrow over the mass shooting in San Bernadino.

Though the gunfire was heard on the other side of the country, the wounds are felt here at home. So, Atlanta's Muslim community did something to break the silence by posting the ad in the newspaper. In this particular ad, they took things a step further and asked people to meet Muslims where they spend much of their time -- mosques.

They said they want Georgia residents to fight fear with facts and ignorance with information. So the ad is more of an invitation to visit mosques around the state.

So, that's what I did.

I went to a prayer service at Roswell Community Masjid to find out what the newspaper post really means for you at home.

Jeff Hamling saw the ad and said he drives by the mosque everyday, but now he's thinking about stopping in.

"I thought I'd stop by and see if anybody was here and I say thank you for running that ad, and more people ought to speak out like that," Hamling said.
