Police say man admitted to shooting 4 dogs he couldn't care for

A 72-year-old man was arrested after police say he admitted to killing four dogs because he couldn't take care of them anymore.

Richard McAllister was arrested in Peachtree City, which is about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta.

The animal shelters in Fayette County are packed, and the director Rani Rathburn said an over-population problem is only growing.

"In Georgia and the south it's always worse," Rathburn said. "Rescue groups, humane societies, animal shelters are constantly full."

However, Rathburn said there are always alternatives if you simply need to get rid of your pet, and police say that's where McAllister failed.

McAllister admitted to shooting the dogs because he couldn't care for them, or find any other way to get rid of them, according to authorities.

Police say it's simply illegal and inhumane.

"Just taking those animals lives is the reason he was charged with cruelty to animals," says Peachtree City Police Sergeant Odilia Bergh. "He was very clear that he was going to bury his animals. There's no indication that he was malicious at all."

After knocking on his door, a man behind a window refused to answer any questions from CBS46.

According to police, you can only put an animal down if it's a threat to you or your livestock.
