Georgia pastors push Religious Freedom Act

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board gathered at the state capitol for Georgia Baptist Pastor’s Day, but another issue took center stage.

Pastors and supporters, made another push to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration act. Several religious freedom bills are now sitting in the General Assembly.

Executive director of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, Robert White said the legislation will protect religious liberty.

“It’s a shame that we’ve got to come underneath the constitution to provide additional protection for citizens in Georgia and across the country," said White.

While White said the bills are needed to prevent an infringement upon constitutional rights, some people who oppose the bill said it’s discriminatory.

“These bills can be used as a vehicle to discriminate specifically against the LGBTQ community,” said Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality.

A few hearings need to be scheduled before legislators can vote.
