Dozens of people chanted outside of Smyrna City Hall Monday night.

They said they’re protesting the promotion of Smyrna police officer Kenneth Owens from sergeant to lieutenant.

Last year, Owens shot and killed 23-year-old Nicholas Thomas. Thomas was unarmed.

Police said when they arrived at the car shop where Thomas worked to serve an arrest warrant, Thomas jumped into a customer’s Maserati and sped off.

Police said he drove toward officers, putting their lives at risk.

The Cobb County District Attorney, police department, GBI and a grand jury have called the incident “legally justified”.

But that explanation isn’t sitting well with protesters. They said Owens should be fired instead of promoted.

A spokesperson for the Thomas family said U.S. Attorney John Horn is still investigating the case and has asked the family for more information.
