One person is dead and another injured following a fire inside an apartment in DeKalb County early Monday morning.

The fire occurred inside a town home at a complex on the 5800 block of Trent Walk Drive in Lithonia around 4:30 a.m.

Neighbors say the deceased man was the neighborhood watch captain, who was a nice guy who cared about his community.

"Everybody liked him," says neighbor Marie Vinson. "I'm just shaking really. It's really hard because everybody knows him and he was a really nice guy."

Firefighters say they found the man on the first floor of the town home. He was the only person inside the town home when the fire broke out.

"The town homes are situated close together," said DeKalb County Fire Captain Erick Jackson. "The only common division is the well, so our firefighters hit the front and backside to keep the fire from spreading laterally."

The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

Investigators say the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen of the home.
