Cleanup begins on years of filth, neglect in Brannon Hill community

Posted: Updated:

Residents and volunteers gathered Saturday morning in the Brannon Hill condo community near Clarkston to begin cleanup efforts on their property, ravaged by years of trash buildup.

"My mom is scared to come down here to pick me up," said resident Kenyata Smith. She has called the community home for three years, but said the last two have been especially dreadful with trash and debris building in seemingly every area of the property.

"It comes from people driving in here, dumping their trash out," she said, also pointing to a massive sinkhole in the middle of a primary driveway on the property. The sinkhole has grown to such a size that vehicles barely have enough room to safely navigate in and out.

DeKalb County leaders want to come in and handle the cleanup themselves, but an attorney for the condo association said they've been given 30 days to make as much progress as they can on their own.

"The people are self determined to do this themselves, it inspires the people to do something for themselves," said attorney Lynn Whatley. "We’re not turning our back and turning our back on the county in that respect. We're just trying to let the people come from their own hearts and souls to protect their own property.”
