DeKalb taxpayers: Complete audit to find $70 million

Contractors with GS Construction are some of the most dependable on the job in DeKalb County.

They’ve been called on about a dozen times to make repairs for the Public Works Department since 2010.

So why do county records show that more than $72 million was paid to GS Construction to make sidewalk improvements on South Hairston Road when the company only received $1.2 million?

“All I can tell you is that document is wrong,” DeKalb County Spokesperson Burke Brennan said. “I don’t know why that says what it says, but it’s clearly incorrect.”

Not so, says Viola Davis with the Unhappy Taxpayer watchdog group. She obtained the information through an open records request and said it seems suspicious.

“If they do not do this forensic audit, you can bet it is a cover up,” Davis said.

So what do county leaders plan to do about it?

“I can request an audit. I will do that, but we don’t have the infrastructure in place to do it,” DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton said.

“If we did a forensic audit at every allegation, we’d do nothing but forensic audits,” Brennan said.

“I am going to request that we have an audit look at this. That we have that level of detail for these series of transactions here,” DeKalb County Commissioner Nancy Jester said.

CBS46 contacted the FBI to see if they’re investigating the matter and while they don’t typically discuss issues like this, they would not deny an investigation.
