STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

A former Gwinnett County Police officer resigned from the force amid charges he harassed and stalked his estranged wife and her boyfriend, police said on Monday.

Police said Zachary Wilkerson, 35, was arrested on simple assault, theft by taking, battery and transmission of video depicting nudity or sexually explicit conduct of an adult.

The charges stem from an August 7 incident in which Wilkerson showed up to a party at the home of a friend of his estranged wife's and took the estranged wife's phone. Police said Wilkerson walked away with the phone and grabbed his wife by the neck and pushed her when she came to try to take it back.

Authorities said he then took out his personal firearm. After others at the party tried to calm him down, he left and posted an explicit video on his wife's Facebook account. Police retrieved the phone the next day, August 8, and arrested Wilkerson.

Before this incident, police said Wilkerson had sent messages to his wife's friend, describing equipment violations with her boyfriend's vehicle, and threatening to have it impounded.

Amid the misdemeanor charges against him, Wilkerson resigned on Monday after a little over a year on the police force.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, police said Wilkerson's behavior was intolerable.

"We are fortunate that this type of behavior was realized very early in his brief career. We find these allegations very disturbing and unbecoming of any of our core values and ethical standards. We do not tolerate any form of misconduct or criminal conduct by any police officer from this department. In this situation, Wilkerson represented everything that police do not stand for and we are fortunate that he is no longer an employee of this agency."
