ATLANTA (CBS46) -

An Atlanta police officer is recovering after being struck during a chase following a traffic stop late Tuesday night.

The incident began around 10:45 p.m. after police pulled over a vehicle without a headlight on Campbellton Road in East Point. After running the plates, they found the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Sergeant Andrew Fincher attempted to arrest the driver of that vehicle but the suspect fled the scene, hitting two police vehicles. As the suspect was driving off, Fincher was knocked down and had his leg run over by the suspect.

The suspect eventually ditched the vehicle and took off on foot. He was apprehended a short time later and taken into custody.

Fincher was taken to Grady Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

"He got run over by the leg but he was hit by the door of the vehicle when he backed up and by the car itself," said Atlanta Police Captain Cliff Johnson. "He's resting right now and is still under observation and trying to make sure everything is okay."

The driver of the stolen vehicle is described as a 16 year-old runaway with multiple warrants.
