ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A large water main break created a huge sink hole and has forced the closure of a street in Midtown Atlanta.

A pipe burst on Monroe Circle near the intersection of Monroe Drive just after midnight Friday morning, leaving the roadway flooded with water. The area is just north of Ponce De Leon Avenue.

A crew member tells CBS46 News that a construction company was working on a house when a vehicle backed into a fire hydrant, causing the break. Water has been shut off to the area and there's no word on when it will turned back on. 10 homes are without water service as a result of the break.

Crews have been out all morning trying to fix the problem but the situation is expected to affect the morning commute so if you're traveling in the area you may want to seek an alternate route.
