DECATUR, GA (CBS46) -

Two Decatur police officers have been reinstated after initially being fired over $7.

Residents were stunned to hear that Lt. Eric Jackson and fellow officer Joshua Speed lost their jobs after taking $7 out of a patrol car and waiting until the next day to report it.

“It’s just stupid, that’s the only word I can think of, stupid,” a resident said. “I think they need to reevaluate the whole situation and give everybody a chance and a new beginning.”

Jackson will be reinstated, but demoted to master police officer with a decrease in pay from $54,371 to $50,482.

Speed will be reinstated, but also demoted from master police officer to police officer with a reduction of pay from $51,750 to $48,048.

Both Jackson and Speed were also put on a one-year probation.
