Hospitals have seen an increase in respiratory and asthma patients since the wildfire first began.

The Georgia State Department of Public Health shared with CBS46 data of five specific cities in Georgia who have seen a higher average of hospital visits than normal as of November 14.

Rome: Rome saw a record high on Monday of 92 asthma patients. 15% of those patients were children.

Gainesville and Athens: Both cities saw a number asthma patients for eight consecutive days. 31% of those Gainesville patients were children and 42% were adults 50 years and older. Meanwhile, Athens saw 62 patients total. Nine of them were also children.

Decatur: The district saw its highest number of patients, 51, on November 14 since the wildfires first began. 42 of that 51 were children.

Atlanta: The city saw the highest count of asthma patients, 197, on November 14. 16 children came in on November 13. That number jumped to 38 by the 14th.

Up in Jasper County, Piedmont Mountainside Hospital says they too have seen a 50% increase in respiratory patients since the 1st of November. “The average number of patients seen in our emergency department with respiratory issues (per day) increased by 8% from September to October, but then jumped by more than 50% in the first 14 days of November.” media representative Amanda Bartlett tells us.

The State Department of Public Health notes that this time of year is also popular for asthma like illness due to temperature and season changes.
