LONG COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Funeral services have been announced for  US Deputy Marshal Commander, shot and killed on November 18 while serving a warrant in southeast Georgia.

An investigation is under way into the shooting death of Patrick Carothers, 53, which took place in Long County, GA., outside of Savannah. A person is in custody according to the US Marshal’s Public Affairs office.

When Carothers attempted to enter a single-wide trailer in a trailer park in Long County to apprehend Dontrell Carter he was shot twice. Authorities returned fire, hitting Carter multiple times, killing him.

Authorities said Carter was wanted for attempted murder of police officers after firing on them during a domestic incident in South Carolina and evading authorities. He was "extremely dangerous", the US Marshal's service said.

“Our deputies and law enforcement partners face dangers every day in the pursuit of justice nationwide,” said U.S. Marshals Service Deputy Director David Harlow. “Pat is a hero and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and five children.”

Carothers, a 26-year veteran of the US Marshals Service, had served as the deputy commander of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force for more than a year.

The funeral for Carothers will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Long Forum of Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross. His internment will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Beahm's Chapel Cemetery in Luray, Virginia.
