ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A Georgia official is urging you to use caution while cooking for the holidays this year.

There has already been 11 cooking-related fire deaths, according to Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.

"Over the years, we have seen many fires caused by a range top that was left unattended," Hudgens added.

The insurance and fire safety commissioner provided to following safety tips:

  • Set a timer when cooking, so you won't forget to turn off the range top oven.
  • If a pan catches fire, cover it with a lid immediately and turn off the burner.
  • Don't fight a grease fire with water, which can make it worse! Use a fire extinguisher.
  • Wear tight-fitting sleeves when cooking as loose clothing can come in contact with a burner.
  • Don't heat your home using a cooking stove.
  • Make sure you have smoke alarms! Hudgens says most fatal fires start between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. when you're asleep.
