DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Fire broke out at a DeKalb County condominium complex that has been cited several times in recent years for building code violations.

Sixteen adults, four children and two pets will be displaced this Thanksgiving as a result of the fire, DeKalb Fire Department Officials said. Firefighters said they're still working to figure out what started the blaze started around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning.

It started in the rear of a building at the Brannon Hills condominium complex on Old Hampton Road near Clarkston and worked its way to the front..

Smoke is billowing out of the structure and crews are on scene trying to put out the flames.

It's unclear what caused the fire or if any injuries have been sustained. It is also unclear how many units are affected.

Complex called "worst neighborhood in America"

The complex has been in the news recently after legal action was taken to help clean up what many people call the worst neighborhood in the United States. People living in the complex have had to deal with mounds of trash and debris from burned buildings and also a million dollar water bill.

In October, a CBS46 investigation found that the Brannon Hill HOA owes DeKalb County a whopping $1.2 million dollars for water. Plus, they owe an additional $49,704.99 for trash service.

The owners' total bill to the county is nearly $1.3 million.

In August, another fire at a building inside the complex led to a water leak underneath the debris from the burned building which flowed into a massive sink hole in the parking lot. The sinkhole stretched nearly 30 yards in length and boxed in some cars.

There is also an enormous pile of trash on the property that hasn’t been cleaned up in years.

Some people want to condemn the Brannon Hill condos and turn it into affordable housing and green space.
