ROSWELL, GA (CBS46) -

The city of Roswell is offering up big bucks to generate new police recruits.

City officials tell CBS46 recruits with no certified training who get hired will receive $3,000. An extra $1,000 will be given to certified hires. This is up from the previous $2,000.

Officials within the department told CBS46 they are working to fill 17 vacant positions.

"Right now that's kind of a tough industry to be in," Sean Tate told CBS46 at a restaurant. "I guess that's why they're short in filling those needs because their lives are in jeopardy."

Residents question why the department is struggling to fill the open positions. One woman pointed to a low starting salary, while others mentioned a national narrative where officers have come under fire recently.

The Roswell Police Department was unavailable to speak on-camera.
