Alleged kidnapper, carjacker caught in Walton Co.

WINDER, GA (CBS46) -

A suspect who allegedly stuffed an elderly woman into the trunk of her car before stealing it was caught Monday in Walton County after leading police on a high speed chase.

According to authorities, John Calhoun, 29,  assaulted and carjacked a construction worker after hiding-out overnight.

The Georgia Bureau Investigation said the construction workers has extensive injuries, but a spokesperson with the GBI expects him to survive. 

Calhoun was captured on Meadow Wood Rd after deputies ran the truck he was driving off the road.

"We just heard a bunch of sirens and then this big old loud bang. We all came outside and looked and we saw all the police officers and cars and the truck crashed into the tree right here," David Adams who lived on the street told CBS46.

This all comes after the GBI said Calhoun kidnapped 81-year-old Beverly Johnson from her Walton County home.  The GBI said Calhoun stuffed Johnson inside the trunk of her vehicle and later crashed her car and ran from deputies. Johnson was found inside the trunk injured, but is expected to survive.  She remains in a hospital.

Calhoun has been charged with two counts of carjacking, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of vehicle theft, two counts of elder abuse, burglary, kidnapping, and financial transaction card fraud.

The Search

Deputies from Barrow County, Walton County, GSP and Winder PD were searching for John Calhoun in the area of Exchange Boulevard in north of Winder in Walton County since Sunday.

Authorities said Calhoun, 28, went to the victim's home and forced her into the trunk of her car before leaving. 

He then wrecked the vehicle behind the Gateway 12 movie theater and abandoned it, following a chase with deputies. He was able to escape. Sunday, numerous deputies were in the area on the ground and air looking for the driver/suspect.

Monday, their search came to an end when authorities received a call of a second victim. Calhoun was caught near a construction site where he robbed and assaulted an unidentified male victim. Calhoun is now being held in Walton County with possible charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, two counts of carjacking, burglary and aggravated assault. 

The elderly woman who was placed in the trunk of her car is reportedly recovering in the hospital. The second male victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover from his serious injuries. 

Police have no motive for this crime at this time.
