ROSWELL, GA (CBS46) -

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a driver to lose control of his car on a residential street in Roswell and crash into a stone mailbox.

The wreck happened at about 1:20 a.m. Monday on King Road, roughly a quarter mile south of Cox Road.

According to Officer Lisa Holland, a Roswell Police Department spokeswoman, a man and his adult daughter both died in the accident. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified them as Robert "Stephen" Smith, 52, and Sydney Smith, 21, both of Roswell.

Holland said Stephen Smith was driving a black Ford Mustang when the car left the roadway and struck a stone mailbox, demolishing it, before hitting another brick mailbox. He died at the scene. His daughter was in the front passenger seat. Sydney Smith was ejected upon impact, police said. Paramedics rushed her to a hospital where she died of her injuries.

Their family dog was also found deceased in the vehicle, police said.
