WALTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A school bus driver was cited on Tuesday after allegedly causing an accident that sent 11 students to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on State Route 81 in Walton County.

Police say the school bus was headed north on State Route 81 when it turned left onto Wagon Trail without yielding, hitting a work van that was traveling south on the same highway.

A total of 11 students were taken to Clearview Regional Medical Center, according to a spokesperson with Georgia State Patrol. Of the 11 students, 10 were taken by EMS, while an additional child was taken by her parents, according to police.

There were 30 students on the bus at the time of the wreck. The students were from Youth Middle School and Walnut Grove High School.

Student Michael King was one of the injured. He spoke with CBS46, saying the bus ride was one he'd never forget.

"The two wheels of the bus went to the side and it landed straight back down," said King. "I looked and there was an indentation right next to me. I suffered a deeply bruised elbow and a deeply bruised pelvis."

The school bus driver was cited for failure to yield. District officials say they've had no previous complaints about the driver, who is on leave.
