In 2016, nine police officers have died in the line of duty across the state of Georgia.

This year has surpassed the past two years at least twofold, and an unprecedented seven of the nine deaths of officers were due to gunfire.

Here are the names of the officers who have died this year.

  • Officer Jodi Smith, Georgia Southwestern State University Department of Public Safety
  • Officer Nicholas Ryan Smarr, Americus Police Department
  • Deputy Sheriff Justin White, Newton County Sheriff’s Office
  • Deputy Sheriff Daryl Smallwood, Peach County Sheriff’s Office
  • Sgt. Patrick Michael Sondron, Peach County Sheriff’s Office
  • Officer Timothy Kevin Smith, Eastman Police Department
  • Inca (K9 Officer), Cherokee County School District Police Department
  • Anthony Freeman, Bibb County Sheriff’s Office
  • Maj. Gregory E. Barney, Riverdale Police Department

Dangerous atmosphere leads some officers to take extra precautions

Officer Bryan Shea of the Johns Creek Police Department rode in his cruiser Friday night.

Shea has been a police officer for 15 years and shared policing is “a little bit different now” as we rode along with him.

“[When pulling up to a red light] I like to leave a car length between myself and the vehicle in front of me just in case somebody does start shooting. I can drive out and hopefully get out of traffic,” Shea said.
