Five Cobb County students named National Merit Scholars

More than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors were announced as National Merit Scholarship recipients, and five of those students attend schools in the Cobb County School District. 

Cobb County School District National Merit Winners include:

  • Thomas B. Perkins, Jr., Harrison High School –National Merit Southern Company Scholarship
  • Olivia M. Marenda, Lassiter High School –National Merit ADP Henry Taub Memorial Scholarship
  • Sophia G. Foppa, Walton High School –National Merit Battelle Scholarship
  • Samantha L. McClendon, Walton High School –National Merit Walgreens CO. Scholarship
  • Sarah Y. Tsai, Walton High School –National Merit Southern Company Scholarship

Over 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year.
