ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Piedmont Road, one of the main roads in the Buckhead area being used to get around the closure of Interstate 85, was closed for nearly 24 hours but is now back open.

The road closed at 9 a.m. Tuesday but reopened at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, about an hour and a half earlier than originally expected, according to Georgia Department Of Transportation officials.

Crews worked overnight to set beams to replace the section of the interstate that collapsed due to a fire that burned under it in March.

Bad to worse

The closure of Piedmont Road in Atlanta was expected to pile on to traffic issues for commuters in the Buckhead area during rush hour.

It's just part of the complications.

GDOT started resurfacing 6.6 miles of I-85 from I-75 up to Clairmont Road Thursday. We found crews already starting on the $22.9 million project. GDOT said now is the best time to do the resurfacing because a lot of the lanes they'll work on are already closed due to the collapse.

"If cars aren't allowed there it only makes sense to say if you have the manpower and you have the time can we start doing this now while there's no traffic on the road," GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale said.

The collapse work is still set to be finished by June 15. Drivers will have to deal with the resurfacing project until February 2018.
