COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Cobb County road project nearly two decades in the making is now complete.

The project along Cobb Parkway or State Highway 41, directly impacts growth and traffic around SunTrust Park in Marietta. The highway now has three lanes in both directions, from the Chattahoochee River north to Akers Mill Road.

The widening project will include a 12-foot wide multi-use trail on the west side of the road connecting to the 25-mile trail network within the Cumberland area. It also features wider sidewalks, new traffic lights and a wider bridge of the Chattahoochee River.

This project was the first to go under construction following the Atlanta Braves’ announcement of their move to Cobb County. Project leaders say the improvements are critical in supporting the area's growing economy.

"We're in a period right now, where $4 billion in investment is being made in a three mile radius of where we are right now," said Tad Leithead with the Cumberland Community Improvement District.

The road construction project cost about $60 million. Most of the money was obtained through federal grants.
