Man leads police on chase through downtown Atlanta; discards gun

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

CBS46 had the first cameras on the scene when an incident witnesses said was like something out of a movie unfolded near the Georgia Capitol Friday morning.

Police are looking for a man who apparently threw his gun from a pickup truck while fleeing from a Georgia Capitol Police officer who had tried to approach his vehicle. Police said during the pursuit, the man also blew through a chain link fence and took his vehicle airborne at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Forsyth Street. Amazingly, no one was injured.

"I heard it first," said Greg Brennan, who witnesses the chase. "It sounded like a chain link fence breaking open, and this blue Dodge extended-cab -- I swear to God, he went airborne right here."

Police sources tell CBS46 it all started when the officer saw the man sleeping in his truck and knocked on his window to tell him to move. That's when he noticed a gun and the frantic chase began.

"He was running for his life," Brennan said.

When the suspect fled, police originally thought it might be a man they're looking for in connection to the shooting of a Banks County Deputy. Police have since said it doesn't appear to be the same man.
