ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry made a major announcement Monday regarding the collapsed I-85 in Atlanta.

He says he can say "with confidence that interstate 85 will be open to traffic before the Memorial Day weekend, which officially starts on May 26th...So we know today, based on where construction stands, that that date is achievable."

That announced date from GDOT is about 21 days before the original date of June 15th. McMurry said the combination of fast demolition and getting beams in place has helped. He also credits good weather and the $3.1 million incentive on the table to finish early.

Although they are pushing to be done by Memorial Day weekend, they are now reaching a point that can't be rushed.

"What's going to slow down is for some of that curing time, so it's not going to look like a whole lot is going on but you have to understand the end is in sight," Director of Construction Marc Mastronardi said. "Once we have the strength developed, and we have a little more cure time on those decks, we will have the ability then to put those bridge barriers on the deck."

GDOT wants to assure people the fast work is not taking any shortcuts on safety.

"I can tell you this is probably the most inspected piece of bridge work we've had," McMurry said. "Material testing all the way from where the beams are manufactured to where they are delivered here, we have watched and inspected all the way through the process."
