ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Congressional District 6 Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff detailed his plan to save taxpayer money during a press conference in downtown Atlanta Wednesday morning.

Ossoff held the conference at Liberty Plaza, saying he has identified several areas of wasteful spending in Washington that he says could be cut immediately. He says those cuts would save taxpayers as much as $16 billion.

In what he calls his "Plan to hold Washington Accountable" Ossoff says he's also identified ways to save taxpayers $600 billion over 10 years. One specific area he mentioned was replacing what he called an archaic accounting system that currently results in 5 percent of payments being directed improperly.

CBS46 asked Ossoff about the social media snafu made by Republican candidate Karen Handel's husband Steve, in which he retweeted and then quickly deleted a tweet that supposedly supports his wife's desire to see minorities excel.

The tweet contained text and images that appear to call out Democrats for "criticizing black children for obeying the law, studying in school and being ambitious as acting white is a trick the party plays on black people to keep them poor, ignorant and dependent."

The caption under an image of a black man then reads, Free the blacks from the Democratic party plantation."

Ossoff did not have much to say on the issue of Steve Handel's tweet.

"As a candidate I try to stay off of Twitter and I've been focused on continuing to develop a plan to save taxpayer dollars and deliver the kind of result that can grow metro Atlanta's economy," said Ossoff. "I think we need a civil and mature discourse of the issues. Sometimes social media can lead us down the wrong track."

We also asked Ossoff what he thinks about a new ad by the Handel campaign that talks about Karen growing up in a rough family life. He says he respects what she's been through but made it clear he also plans to keep up his attacks on what he calls her "wasteful spending."
