A federal judge has ordered Georgia officials to reopen voter registration in District 6, pushing the original deadline of March 20--before the special election--back to May 21.

Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel, the top two who advanced to a June 20 runoff, are vying for Tom Price's vacant House seat.

The lawsuit prompting the registration deadline extension could affect the election result, as more people who did not consider voting in the initial election are expected to turn out in the runoff.

Here are a few steps on how to register to vote in Georgia:

1.) Click here to access Georgia's online voter registration system.

On this starting page, you have one of two options. If you know you're already registered, you can proceed to the next step.

If you'd like to know if you're registered, clicking that option will redirect you to the Secretary of State's "My Voter Page" (MVP). Here, you can check your registration status, poll location, early voting locations, elected officials, provisional ballot status, mail-in application and voter status.

2.) Once you've been made aware of your registration status, if you are not registered, you can return to this page.

Here, you'll have two options, whether to register to vote online (using a Georgia drivers license or other valid identification), OR register by printing and mailing in the application.

3.) Clicking either of these options will take you to the webpage that shows the minimum requirements necessary to vote in an election.

The requirements are that you are a citizen; you are a legal resident of the county; you are at least 17 years and 6 months old at the time of registration and will be 18 by the time you cast your ballot; you are not serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude; and you have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge.

The online voter registration process is straightforward with personalized instructions from there. And if you are not using an advanced in-person ballot, be sure to have your Georgia valid identification at the polls for casting your ballot.
