DeKalb County sheriff under investigation following arrest for indecency

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

For the second day in a row, DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann did not report to work and he has not been seen publicly since his arrest near Piedmont Park over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Mann’s attorney responded to the allegations that the sheriff exposed himself and committed a lewd act in front of an Atlanta police officer in the park.

“While Sheriff Mann would like to address his supporters and the public, I have instructed him not to make any statements...” Mann’s attorney, Noah Pines, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s Peace Officers Standards and Training Council, which certifies law enforcement, have opened an investigation into the incident.  It could take a year and a half to complete.

Sheriff Mann was sworn into office three years ago and has no plans of stepping down, according to his lawyer.

“Sheriff Mann will continue to run the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office at the level of excellence it is known for and in keeping with what the citizens of DeKalb County expect and deserve,” Pines said.

Because of the charges, the president of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association hand-delivered a letter to the governor requesting that he immediately appoint a committee to investigate the pending criminal charges against Sheriff Mann.

The Governor’s office is currently reviewing the request.

Mann’s attorney also talked about the sheriff in a personal way.

“Personally, I can tell you that I’ve known Jeff Mann for a long time. He is a man of honor and integrity and a dedicated public servant,” Pines said.

If Georgia's Peace Officers Standards and Training Council recommends suspension or revocation of Sheriff Mann's certification, he would no longer be able to serve as Sheriff.

CBS46 also checked with Atlanta police, and the arresting officer in this case, Sherrod Snell, was not equipped with a body-cam so there is no police video of the incident.

Also, according to Snell’s post certification, he is a 10-year veteran of the force and has a stellar record.
