ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and GDOT commissioner Russell McMurry gave an update Wednesday morning on the progress of construction on I-85.

Governor Deal announced that I-85 will reopen no later than Monday for rush hour traffic. He didn't rule out the possibility of the roadway reopening over the weekend, weather permitting.

GDOT says it plans to have the north side open by Saturday and the southbound lanes open by Sunday. What's left to do is install expansion joints, finish side wall cement pouring, electrical work and then clean up.

Governor Deal thanked everyone involved and said this has been a tremendous outcome.

"To be able to completely demolish the damaged section of a bridge and totally replace it and open it up again for business as usual in just six short weeks we may have set some records in the process of doing that," said Deal.

The press conference was held at the North Wing of the State Capitol in downtown Atlanta.

GDOT recently said that work on the elevated section of I-85 near Piedmont Road that collapsed on March 30 is coming to an end. Crews striped the stretch of roadway over the weekend and work is expected to wrap up before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Officials said in April it would take "several months" to repair the 700-feet of the roadway overpass that fell after the major fire started.

The Georgia Department of Transportation offered the contractor $3.1 million in incentives to get the work done before a June 15 deadline. The demolition work costs $1.6 million. The rebuilding will cost $11.9 million. All of it combined with incentives included is $16.6 million dollars.
