ATLANTA (CBS46) -

For drivers, the joy of hearing I-85 will open up this weekend is quickly overshadowed by word of more road work coming.

"Tell them to hurry up and get it done is all I can say," driver David Corlee said.

"It's going to be hard dealing with this and then when you think it's going to be over with, more stuff is happening," driver Shaquilla Lane said. "So it's just we need some relief."

The work is a resurfacing project. Three southbound lanes on the downtown connector will have nightly closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.  The work will stretch from Williams Street down to Cleveland Avenue.

CBS46 asked GDOT why this project was starting just as I-85 was opening and traffic is flowing?

GDOT said this is summer construction season so there will be a lot of road projects happening around the area drivers should be aware of. They added that this is overnight work to minimize traffic impact.

"That's when I go to work so that is still terrible for me," Lane said.

Some drivers understand it's a needed inconvenience for better roads.

"They [have] to get it done. That's the only way we are going to be able to ride better, so I hope they get everything taken care of," Lane said.
