ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A former Atlanta Police Officer has been indicted by a Grand Jury, accused of allowing a murder fugitive to escape.

Tommy Leon Williams, 26, was indicted on charges of violation of oath of public officer, hindering apprehension of a criminal, and obstruction of law enforcement officer.

According to the indictment, fugitive Jabari Mathis was tracked to a house in northwest Atlanta. APD dispatched several officers to the scene, one of which was Williams.

Williams allegedly allowed Mathis to escape the house by helping him crawl out of a window. Mathis was found less than 30 minutes later hiding under a house several blocks away.

Reports from APD state the suspect was overheard saying "He let me go, he know me and I know him, Tommy Williams is like an uncle to me.”

Williams resigned from the police force after an arrest warrant was issued.

If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in jail.
