ATLANTA (CBS46) -

CBS46 has learned more than three thousand people are now registered to vote in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District after a federal judge ordered the state to extend the registration deadline.

The runoff race in the 6th is one of the most watched in the country with millions of dollars in donations pouring into both democrat Jon Ossoff's and republican Karen Handel’s campaigns.

With just nine days until registration closes again, CBS46 went to the Fulton County Voter Registration Office to see how they are handling all the new applications.

“We received 19,000 applications in April… The numbers that we processed in April were the same as last year which was a presidential year,” shared Richard Barron, Director of Voter Registration in Fulton County. Barron shared his office hasn't slowed down in a year and a half.

“Since January 2016 we have been seeing almost astronomical numbers,” Barron added. More people registered to vote last year than even in 2008 when President Barack Obama first ran for office. The high volume has continued well after the election of President Donald trump.

“It seems as though the presidential election one way or another has inspired people to make sure that they're registered to vote,” Barron added.

With top politicians like President Trump campaigning for Karen Handel and celebrities like Alyssa Milano driving Jon Ossoff supporters to the polls, voters have all kinds of questions about the race in the 6th.  The seat was vacated in February when Tom Price accepted a position in President Trump’s Cabinet as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Fulton, Cobb and DeKalb counties (which cover the 6th) are now processing a backlog of tens of thousands of applications. A federal judge ruled voters should get a chance to vote in the runoff even if they did not vote in the primary and ordered the state re-open voter registration.

These numbers we just got from the Secretary of State’s Office on the number of voters who have registered after the initial deadline of March 20th:

6th District voters with registration date between 3/21/17 and 5/12/17

  • Cobb – 757
  • Dekalb – 1,272
  • Fulton – 1,707
  • Total – 3,736

The new deadline to register is next Sunday May 21st. All three counties tell CBS46 they are prepared to handle a surge of last minute applications.
