ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Several media outlets are reporting that Roger Ailes, founder and former Chairman and CEO of Fox News and the Fox Television Stations Group, has died at the age of 77.

Ailes founded the FOX News channel in 1996 and later became chairman and CEO of Fox Television Stations Group in 2005.

He came under fire after a book published in 2014 accused him of sexual harassment claims involving a former television producer who claimed he offered her a raise if she would sleep with him.

Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Ailes in 2016 which eventually led to his resignation.

Ailes also served as a media consultant for presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

His wife, Elizabeth Ailes, released the following statement:

"I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning. Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many. He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise—and to give back. During a career that stretched over more than five decades, his work in entertainment, in politics, and in news affected the lives of many millions."
